Manuscript Summary:Transcription of the works of Columbanus by Jodocus Metzler (1574–1639) of the Abbey of St. Gall: Instructiones I–XIII (pp. 1–58), Exhortatoria S. Columbani in conventu ad Fratres (pp. 58–60 ; Columbanus’ authorship is doubtful), Epistula IV (pp. 60–70), Epistula VI (= Instructio XIV) (pp. 70–72), De octo vitiis (pp. 73–74), Epistulae III, II, V, I (pp. 74–119). According to Metzler’s statement on p. 1, he copied a codex from Bobbio written in Irish script (ex manuscripto codice monasterii Bobiensis, litteris Hibernicis confecto) ; however, this codex has not survived until today. Metzler might have produced the copy in 1611 during a stay at Bobbio on one of his travels to Rome. This manuscript is the only textual witness for Columbanus’ letters I-V. It is conceivable that Metzler’s copy is based on the same codex as Patrick Fleming’s posthumously published (Collectanea sacra, Löwen 1667 ; in 1623, Fleming copied two manuscripts from Bobbio that have also been lost.)(sno)

Copie (Jod. Metzler's) nach der irisch geschriebenen Handschrift von Bobbio, wie die Ueberschrift S. 1 angibt. Von S. 96 bis zum Schluss hat Metzler am Rand fehlerhafte oder unverständliche Lesarten des Cod. Bobbiensis angemerkt.
Die Seiten 1-58 enthalten 13 Sermones, die nämlichen und in der gleichen Folge wie in Migne's Cursus 80, 229-253;
der Rest S. 58-119 enthält eine Exhortatio S. Columbani ad fratres (S. 58-60 = Migne 80, 257) und 6 Epistolae (S. 60, 70, 74, 77, 88, 109 = Migne 80, 270 256, 268, 264, 274 und 259) nebst einem kleinen Stück De octo vitiis S. 73-74 (Migne 80, 259).
Der oft vorkommende Sermo O tu vita (Migne p. 238) steht auf S. 23.
Metzler reproducirt ihn in seiner Chronik Cod. 1408 p. 67 nebst den Varianten des Bobiensis, und spricht ebenda S. 64 von einer Vita S. Columbani msc. ex monast. Bobiensi a me recepta a° 1611 quacum concordat ea quae in nostra Bibliotheca reperitur etiam msc. (im Cod. 553). Metzler hat also das Original nicht in Bobbio selbst gesehn; ob dasselbe noch vorhanden ist, mögen Andere wissen.
