Murray, Charles Fairfax (1849-1919)
Testimone della straordinaria vitalità dei Commentari di Cesare all'inizio del Rinascimento (se ne contano più di 240 esemplari nel XV secolo), il CB 44 è stato realizzato intorno al 1480 a Napoli, nell'atelier del miniatore Cola Rapicano. La considerevole decorazione a bianchi girari e le iniziali miniate in apertura dei diversi libri sono tratti consueti dei manoscritti tipicamente umanistici. Il cavaliere in armatura raffigurato nell'iniziale ornata del f° 1r è invece una rappresentazione inconsueta dell'imperatore.

Questo manoscritto ebraico del sec. XV riunisce i testi liturgici e commenta i riti che scandiscono la cerimonia della Pasqua ebraica. La Haggadah di Pesach, riccamente miniata ed illustrata, contiene la versione liturgica integrale del racconto dell'Esodo. La prima parte del manoscritto presenta il testo del rito italiano, la seconda quello del rito aschenazita. E' stato copiato e miniato da Joël ben Siméon, che firma la sua opera in un colophon (f. 34r): Io sono Joël ben Simeon – che la sua memoria sia una benedizione – chiamato Veibusch Ashkénazi, originario della città di Cologna, sita sui bordi del Reno.

Il doppio foglio di apertura di questo manoscritto delle Metamorfosi e dei Fasti di Ovidio annuncia già i suoi riferimenti all'antichità : l'utilizzo di lettere capitaliall'antica, il color porpora dell'insieme del foglio e la raffigurazione del lauro che corona i versi del poeta collocano la produzione del volume nel Rinascimento italiano. La dedica scritta in caratteri d'oro sul f. 1v conferma quest'origine : il manoscritto è stato copiato dal napoletano Ippolito Lunense per il segretario di Ferdinando I d'Aragona, Antonello Petrucci, del quale si scopre lo stemma inquadrato da putti e da cornucopie dell'abbondanza al f. 2r. Le scritture cambiano, nello stile e nel colore dell'inchiostro, a seconda della natura del testo. La decorazione a ‘bianchi girari', di grande qualità, rivela una fattura tipicamente napoletana, realizzata nello stile del miniatore reale Cola Rapicano.

Le venti commedie di Plauto contenute in questo manoscritto sono state copiate nel corso della seconda metà del XV sec. in una scrittura umanistica molto accurata. Ogni commedia è introdotta da una iniziale d'oro con bianchi girari. La prima carta è inoltre dotata di un riquadro composto da intrecci vegetali interrotti nella parte inferiore da una corona di alloro attorniata da due putti, il cui interno, lasciato bianco, avrebbe dovuto contenere lo stemma del possessore. Secondo un'antica segnatura che si trova sul piatto anteriore, il manoscritto apparteneva nel XVII sec. alla biblioteca dei maurini a Roma.

La leggenda tebana e quella troiana hanno avuto un'influenza straordinaria durante il Medioevo. Scritto dalla mano di Jacotin de Lespluc nel 1469, il cartaceo CB 160 contiene adattamenti in prosa della Historia trojana di Guido delle Colonne e una versione delle gesta del figlio di Edipo che si rifà alla Storia antica fino a Cesare. I suoi disegni a inchiostro sfumato (lavis) richiamano quelli del manoscritto 9650-52 della Biblioteca reale del Belgio.
